Use the cake serving guide below to estimate how many guests each cake size will comfortably serve.
Understanding Cake Serving Sizes
Not every celebration requires the same size slice. The number of servings depends on how the cake is cut. That's why professional bakeries typically use two serving styles.
Party Servings
Party servings are larger, dessert-sized slices that are perfect for birthdays, family gatherings, anniversaries, baby showers, and casual celebrations. Each slice is approximately 2 × 1.5 inches, giving guests a generous portion of cake.
If cake is the main dessert at your celebration, this serving style is usually the best choice.
Event Servings
Event servings are smaller, elegant slices commonly used for weddings, corporate events, bridal showers, fundraisers, and large receptions. Each slice measures approximately 1 × 2 inches, allowing more guests to enjoy cake while keeping portions appropriate after a full meal.
Many wedding venues and banquet halls use this serving method.

The chart above shows the approximate number of servings for our most popular cake sizes. Before placing your order, ask yourself three simple questions.
How many guests are attending?
Always start with your guest count. If you're expecting around 20 guests, an 8-inch cake may be perfect for a birthday party but could also serve a larger group if you're using event-sized slices.
Will cake be the main dessert?
- If cake is the highlight of the celebration, choose Party Servings. Guests usually enjoy larger slices when no additional desserts are available.
- If you'll also be serving cupcakes, cookies, pastries, ice cream, or a dessert table.
- Event Servings may be sufficient.
Do you want leftovers?
- Many customers intentionally order one size larger.
- Leftover cake tastes wonderful the next day and gives everyone the opportunity for a second slice.
- When you're between two sizes, we almost always recommend choosing the larger cake.
Birthday Cake Size Guide
Birthday parties usually call for Party Servings because cake is often the main dessert. Here are some common recommendations:
- 6-inch cake — perfect for small family celebrations.
- 8-inch cake — ideal for most birthdays with friends and family.
- 10-inch cake — great for larger birthday parties.
- 12-inch cake — excellent for big celebrations and milestone birthdays.
If children are attending, portions are often slightly smaller, allowing the cake to serve a few additional guests.
Wedding Cake Serving Guide
Wedding cakes are traditionally cut using Event Servings. This allows elegant portions while accommodating more guests. Many couples also choose tiered cakes that combine multiple sizes to create a stunning centerpiece while serving everyone comfortably.
If you're planning a wedding in Palatine, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Barrington, Buffalo Grove, or nearby Chicago suburbs, we're happy to recommend the ideal combination of tiers based on your guest count.
